New district court rules

As at 1 November 2009, a radical new form of rules will be introduced to deal with disputes in the district courts.

These changes will be important to any person or company having a dispute or claim the value of which is less than $200,000, including actions for debt recovery. The new process streamlines the way in which such claims are to be handled with a strong emphasis on negotiated settlements. It limits the ability of parties to use technical procedure steps to delay matters and attempts to ensure that matters which do proceed to hearing are concise and more cost-effective.
